A Retrofit Capacitive Sensing and Occupancy Detection System Using Fluorescent Lamps
نویسنده
چکیده
This paper presents a retrofit system that exploits a fluorescent lamp’s own stray electric fields as an excitation source for capacitive sensing. The principal result of this work is the demonstration of sufficient sensitivity for detecting human occupants below the lamp. Experimental results are presented demonstrating detection ranges of 10 ft. between the lamp and the nearest edge of a human occupant. Theory is developed to inform system design choices and future work. A full-system simulation is presented including the simulation of a lumped element capacitive model. A circuit model of the fully-differential front end amplifier is developed and then validated as part of the full-system simulation.

Human occupancy detection and localization are important in a variety of smart building applications including building security, assisted living monitors, and energyefficient heating ventilation and air cooling and lighting. Current implementation of such systems is limited by motion– sensor technologies, e.g., passive infrared (PIR) and ultrasonic sensors, which substitute as occupancy detect...

Several different techniques are described for turning a large wall into an interactive surface. These include capacitive sensing of arm and body gesture, scanning laser rangefinders for tracking hands above video walls, passive tracking of knocks on large plates of glass with distributed acoustic pickups, and the detection of touch via frustrated total internal reflection.

Weakly electric fish emit an AC electric field into the water and use thousands of sensors on the skin to detect field perturbations due to surrounding objects. The fish's active electrosensory system allows them to navigate and hunt, using separate neural pathways and receptors for resistive and capacitive perturbations. We have previously developed a sensing method inspired by the weakly elec...

Fluorescent lamps were first introduced to the world in the 1939 World’s Fair. They are low-pressure mercury discharge lamps. Since then, the fluorescent lamps have been the mainly lighting source due to their merits of high color rendering, soft-visualization, long life, and energy-saving. Unfortunately, however, all gas discharge lamps cannot directly connect to a voltage source and require a...

Introduction: In recent years, use of compact fluorescent lamps has increased in order to optimize energy consumption. The aim of this study was to evaluate the radiations of electromagnetic spectrum from usual compact fluorescent lamps. Methods: In this study, 48 compact fluorescent lamps from different brands and cover (warm – cool) were selected. For studied lamps, operational facto...
